Dover’s main drag is a blur of nail salons and check-cashing joints, but walk a block past the train tracks and lunchtime smells like garlic and lime. You can order a proper Irish coffee behind a weathered pub door, then amble down Route 46 for pupusas that ooze cheese like they’re showing off.

The spreads run from stretchy vanilla soft serve to a gyro platter Abe himself checks on. One scallop of flan arrives with fruit and a corrected pronunciation.

Short on opinions? Only this: the ceviche at Las Tres Marias is brighter than most seashore spots.

Here’s where the fork needs to go next.

French onion soup standout

The Quiet Man has an unassuming storefront, but inside it feels like a proper local haunt. I ordered the French onion soup, and it arrived bubbling under a thick layer of melted cheese. The broth was deeply savory, the onions soft and sweet. My Irish coffee came with a proper float of cream that held its shape until the last sip. The staff let me linger without hovering. The live music was acoustic, not overpowering. It is the kind of place where you can hear conversations and still enjoy your meal. I left with a full stomach and a quiet sense of satisfaction.

Sabor Latino Bar is a small, brightly painted spot that packs a punch. I tried the empanadas, and they were easily the best I have had in Dover. The crust was flaky, and the filling was seasoned with just the right amount of spice. Portions are generous; a single order could easily feed two. The owners greeted me warmly and checked in twice without being intrusive. The menu leans toward home-style cooking, and the aroma from the kitchen is appetizing. It is not fancy, but it is honest, filling food. I will be back for the chicken with rice.

Las Montañeras Bakery and Cafe is a cheerful spot that smells like fresh bread and coffee. I grabbed a seat near the window and ordered a coffee and an arepa with butter. The arepa was warm, slightly crisp on the outside, and soft inside. The butter melted into every bite. The menu also offers a hearty lunch buffet, which changes daily. On my visit, there was a stewed beef with plantains that was rich and satisfying. The staff are patient if you need time to decide. It is a convenient stop for breakfast or a casual lunch. The prices are fair for the quality.

Cafelombia is a straightforward coffee shop that gets the basics right. I ordered a cappuccino, and it was balanced, not too bitter, with a smooth milk foam. The portions for their breakfast plates are generous; I had the eggs with chorizo and a side of beans. Everything arrived hot and well presented. The staff were friendly, though one seemed new and needed help from a coworker. The prices are reasonable, especially for the amount of food you get. It is a no-nonsense place to fuel up, whether you are in a rush or want to sit with a paper. I would return for the coffee alone.

Tony & Vinnies Italian Bakery & Deli is the kind of place where they know the regulars by name. I ordered a sandwich on fresh semolina bread, and it was piled high with meats and provolone. They did not skimp on the fillings. The service was quick, and the staff were kind and efficient. I also grabbed a cannoli to go, and the shell was crisp while the ricotta was lightly sweet. The coffee is hot and strong, a good pairing with any pastry. It is a working-class deli with a warm vibe. I will be back for their meatball hero.

4 Seasons has a name that promises variety, and the lunch menu delivers. I sat at the counter and ordered their gyro platter. The meat was tender, and the tzatziki was garlicky and cool. The owner, Abe, came by to ask how my meal was, and he seemed genuinely invested. The portions are large; I could not finish everything. The menu includes Middle Eastern classics alongside American options. The service was attentive without being pushy. It is a comfortable, unpretentious place. I left with a container of leftovers and a good impression.

Dover Scoops & Brews is a cheerful little shop that does two things well. I ordered a hot chocolate, and it was thick, creamy, and topped with whipped cream. The ice cream is the real draw; I tried the vanilla, which was rich and stretchy in that old-fashioned way. The staff were welcoming and offered samples without hesitation. The selection includes classic flavors and a few rotating specials. It is a good spot for dessert after a meal or a casual afternoon treat. The seating is limited but cozy. I would recommend it for families or anyone with a sweet tooth.

Troy Social Restaurant & Bar has a modern, chic interior that feels inviting. I sat at the bar and ordered their shrimp cocktail. The shrimp were large, cold, and served with a zesty cocktail sauce. The drinks menu is creative; I had an espresso martini that was smooth and not too sweet. The service was attentive, with the bartender checking in regularly. The atmosphere is lively but not loud. I also ordered a side of truffle fries, which were crispy and perfectly salted. It is a great place for a date or a night out with friends. The prices are a bit higher, but the quality justifies it.

The Corner Bistro NJ has a great outdoor patio, which is perfect on a nice day. I sat outside with a friend and ordered the chicken wrap, which was fresh and packed with veggies. The menu is varied, with everything from burgers to salads. The staff were friendly and kept the water coming. The patio is shaded and well spaced. Inside, the vibe is casual and comfortable. I tried their sweet potato fries, which were a nice touch. It is a reliable spot for a laid-back meal. I would come back for the patio alone.

Lola's Tex Mex & Cafelombia is tucked into a food court, but it stands out. I ordered the pupusas, and they were the best I have had outside of a dedicated Salvadoran spot. The masa was thick, and the filling was cheesy and hot. The chicken breast plate was thick and juicy, with a smoky seasoning. The staff were accommodating, even when I asked for extra lime. The portions are generous, especially for a food court stall. I took half of my order to go. It is a smart pick if you want something heartier than typical mall food.

Las Tres Marias sits on a busy corner, but the moment you step inside, it feels calm. I ordered the ceviche, and it was fresh, bright, and citrusy. The fish was tender, the onions crisp, and the cilantro added a nice punch. Parking was easy to find right on the street. The service was outstanding; my water glass was never empty. The restaurant is clean and well kept, with simple wooden tables. I also tried their fried yucca, which was crispy on the outside and soft inside. It is a solid choice for authentic Peruvian food in the area.

La Casa del Sabor is a hidden gem for Costa Rican cooking. I had the gallo pinto with a choice of grilled chicken, and it was comforting and well seasoned. The rice and beans were cooked together with a hint of garlic. The staff were attentive and even corrected my pronunciation of a dish without making me feel silly. For dessert, I ordered the flan, and they generously served it with a side of fresh fruit. The passion fruit juice was tangy and refreshing. This is rare regional fare in Dover, and they do it proud. I left feeling like I had been invited into someone's home.
