Cape May is a beach town, not a Chinatown. That’s fine.

The options run from a spotless, nostalgic General Tso’s to beach-perfect lobster buns you can eat in your swimsuit. I ate short rib so tender it made me question every other takeout order I’ve ever placed.

I also dodged chow mein that looked older than the Victorian houses. So, forget the fudge shops.

Your chopsticks have a job to do. Here’s where to start.

Homestyle To Go West Cape May is the kind of place that makes you rethink what takeout can be. The short rib was excellent. Actually, I should say the short rib was excellent. Tender, rich, and worth the drive alone. The crispy eggplant sandwich surprised me with its crunch and lightness. Salmon looked great and tasted even better. Everything felt fresh, made that day, with care. The customer service was impeccable, which in Cape May can feel like a rare luxury. FOO BAO Asian Sliders is a different animal entirely. Beach-perfect bowls, fresh and bright. The lobster bun was soft, almost pillowy. It melted in a way that felt decadent but not heavy. Thai iced tea won me over, sweet and creamy, a perfect counter to the heat. Sesame chicken had real flavor, not just sugar and grease. This place is distinct from the typical spots along the shore. It feels modern, playful, and genuinely delicious. If you're tired of the same old fried rice, come here. Bring your beach towel. No need to change out of your swimsuit. That's the vibe.

It feels local, beloved, and a little worn in the right ways. Friendly, varied service keeps things pleasant. This isn't a place for culinary adventure. It's a place for reliable, comforting meals. The owner personally greeted guests, shaking hands and checking in. That kind of care shows. If you want sushi in Cape May, this is the spot. It's not just good for the area. It's just good, period.

Lucky Bones Backwater Grille isn't strictly Chinese, but it deserves a mention. The crispy zucchini were a pleasant surprise, light and salty. Fresh-cut fries still had the skin on, exactly how I like them. Convenient parking and clean bathrooms made the whole experience smoother. The thin, crispy cheese pizzas were better than expected, a nice alternative after days of heavy sauces. The fig-tini was sweet and nicely balanced, a good way to end the meal. Highlights
Friendly, low-key, relaxing atmosphere
Hot food, correct orders every time
Takeout available, dine-in unhurried
Great for repeat visits, monthly staples
Chunky vegetables, though a mixed bag

Fai's Chinese Restaurant is a quiet kind of dependable. Low-key, friendly, and relaxing. The food arrives hot, and the orders are correct every time. That might sound simple, but after a week of mishaps elsewhere, I appreciate it deeply. Takeout is easy, but dining in feels unhurried, no one rushing you out the door. I've been back multiple times, making it a monthly staple. The chunky vegetables are a mixed bag, sometimes great, sometimes just okay. But the consistency wins. If you want a calm dinner without fuss, this is your spot. It won't blow your mind. It will steady your week.

Saturday: 11 AM–10 PM
Highlights
Skip the stale chow mein
Tiny shrimp, dark noodles
Order with patience required
Front desk lacks warmth
Avoid the old leftovers

Golden City needs a warning label. Skip the chow mein. It was stale, as if it had been waiting for someone to claim it for hours. The shrimp were tiny, lost in dark noodles that tasted of old oil. I ordered with patience. That patience was tested. The front desk lacked warmth, making me feel like an interruption rather than a customer. Avoid the old leftovers, especially if they're sitting in the display case. I saw things there that should have been retired days prior. This place has potential, but it's not living up to it right now. Go somewhere else. Your stomach will thank you.
